It all started with a leg of lamb...
I'm feeling sheepish myself
Allow me to share a story with you.
A story following the most adorable creature to grace the earth. Or a juicy, tender cut of meat.
A young girl stood in wonder next to her mother, as she lovingly prepared a family dish. A leg of lamb. With great force, her mother split the bone in two, sliding the meat into a clay bowl and seasoning to perfection. This Greecian ritual, passed down from generation to generation was magnificent to behold.
Many years later, the young girl would grow into a woman.
She would remember her mother as she stood in the kitchen, forcing the knife into the bone- almost shredding her hand in the process. The force was mammoth but when it eventually sat roasting in a hot oven, mouths did water.
One cold evening, bellies rumbled once again inside the house. Her husband watched as she took great effort to split the bone. Wanting to help, he asked a very simple question.
Why do we always divide the meat?
The question irked her. This was part of her heritage! This was the way it had always been prepared and she wasn’t going to change that. She was giving her mother’s recipe respect. Her lineage respect for God’s sake! He understood and said no more. But his silly question stayed with her.
It wasn’t long before her mother came up to visit. Like most conversations do, they struck quickly upon food. Out of earshot from her husband, she asked why her family would divide the meat each time the meal was cooked.
Her mother laughed.
‘We split the lamb leg in two because our oven was too small. It was the only way it would fit.’
This story is not my own, but it belongs (with some edits) to a dear friend.
Turns out, the things we label as sacred are not always so.
Maybe it was right for a time, but perhaps it’s time to move on.
This applies to our way of hitting our dreams in the real world. If you’ve always done it the same way with no luck, perhaps its time for a change, dear reader.
Different email format, different pictures, different contacts, different discpline, different attitude, different mentality.
Try it.
And if you see any lamb on the way? Save me a plate would you?
